What team will you be supporting and what do they do?

You will be supporting our Assessment and Training Team who assess each young person's needs, goals and aspirations and work out a Support and Development plan with them to help them get their life back on track, including:

  • Information, advice and guidance - support into education and training
  • Workwise - accredited support into employment and work-related opportunities
  • ICT - accredited support and developing young people's inclusion in digital media
  • Sportswise - access to recreation and physical activities to encourage health and wellbeing and develop talent
  • Skills for life - help to achieve functional skills and qualifications
  • Moneywise - support to overcome financial exclusion and debt. 

Learning and Study Support Volunteers are required to:

1. Attend compulsory training session/s

2. Adhere to the administrative requirements of the role

3. Attend supervision sessions and all relevant additional training

4. Maintain regular contact with the Assessment and Training Officers

5. Be accountable to and represent Centrepoint appropriately.

Volunteers should meet the following criteria;

Essential

1. Ability to engage young people in learning activities (1:1 and/or small groups)

2. Personal achievement within further/higher education or other learning or training programmes

3. High level of literacy and numeracy

4. Experience of managing deadlines within an academic environment

5. Have an understanding of some of the issues and challenges experienced by young people and a willingness to be flexible and adapt as appropriate

6. Be committed, reliable and flexible

7. Have a non-judgmental, open-minded empathetic approach

8. Be friendly and approachable

9. Have excellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills

10.Be creative, dynamic, confident and willing to contribute ideas

11.Be confident, have a sense of humour and not be easily shocked or phased

12.Ability to fulfill the administrative requirements of the role

13.Ability to demonstrate Centrepoint’s values (integrity, energy, humility, entrepreneurial, accountable and focused).

Desirable

1. Experience of working with homeless people and/or experience of homelessness

2. Experience of working with socially excluded young people

3. Experience of teaching or tutoring

4. Qualified Teacher status or SEN Level 3/4/5.

Support for volunteers

  • Volunteers receive the following support throughout their volunteering:
  • Structured induction and training
  • Ongoing support and supervision from the volunteering team
  • Ongoing support and supervision from your supervisor
  • Access to further training
  • Travel and other reasonable expenses reimbursed

Key responsibilities

The aim is to help young people to achieve specific course outcomes, gain confidence with learning and education and gain the skills they need to be academically independent and successful. Activities may include: Supporting young people with particular outcomes or activities as required by their course/programme e.g. writing an essay, giving a presentation, producing a portfolio Supporting young people with homework or revision tasks Providing numeracy or literacy support Supporting young people to learn and develop independent study skills Supporting the Assessment and Training Team with the delivery of internal learning programmes
