Big Words, But Small-Minded: Tackling Inequality As We Climb The Educational Ladder

Join Piers Telemacque, Adam Elliott-Cooper and Melissa Owusu for the first NCOP HE progression event on Friday October the 6th in the Michelle Sutton lecture theatre (Bradford College Hockney Building).

The day will be split in to 2 identical sessions running from 9.30 till 12 then 1.30 till 4. There will be a free lunch for both the morning session attendees and the afternoon ones served in the lecture theatre from 12 till 1.

This event is specifically focusing on race inequality in the education system and is for self-identifying BME students.

Education is about learning, but for many of us to achieve, some things have to be UNLEARNED. Inequality within our schools, colleges and Universities is everywhere, and while there is a wealth of knowledge to be learned, there's a whole heap of inequality that has become so normal, we have to UNlearn it.

Our social relations, curriculums and tests can all be effected by race, class and gender inequality, and this workshop aims to help students understand, and find ways to overcome it.

The work shop will be delivered by Dr. Adam Elliott-Cooper who received his doctorate from the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford. His current research focuses on urban displacement in London.

And in the morning session there will be an additional session delivered by Melissa Owusu who has just finished her term as education officer at Leeds students union and has just started her PHD at Leeds university. Her session is called “why is my curriculum white” and will explore why our curriculum is so euro centric and how we can decolonise the curriculum - check out her TEDx Talk on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeKHOTDwZxU
